Lately, everyone has seen the commercials for Cash4Gold.com (I am not advertising for them) or some sort of gimmick like that. And with the economy the way it is, people will do just about anything for a quick buck. However, what you need to understand is that all jewelry has a price but may not sell at all to anyone. Here are some facts about certain kinds of jewelry.
Costume Jewelry: Costume Jewelry isn't neccesarily fake jewelry. However, there isn't much to it either. Most costume pieces are cheap metal coated in real gold or silver. The precious metals are there, but in such a small amount that it's almost impossible to sell to anyone, except for maybe at a yardsale or ebay. If your jewelry has stones (Amythest, Garnet, etc.), the will most likely be fake stones or lab created stones. Lab created stones are not fake stones, but they are as the name proclaims created in a lab and not by nature. So, they will have a pretty bad decline in price as well. Sell these pieces for anywhere between $3.00-$35.00, depending on stone and amount of precious metal. A lab created stone with gold-coated chain or ring band will most likely be the more.
Mid-Level Jewelry: This type of jewelry has a wide-range of prices. This is due to many different things. Again, the lab created stones come into play. In fact, most of the pieces in this catagory will have lab created stone. One difference it that the stone may have a better clarity level. Also included in this is Cubic Zirconia, or Imatation Diamond. When the precious metals are put into play, most colors will include sterling siver or white gold, and some are even yellow gold. However, most of the metals are low in quantity and sell still pretty cheaply, but moreso than Costume Jewelry. This is when you start using those Gold stites or pawn shops. Prices are around $40.00-$200.00.
Pricey Jewelry: Prices are so high for these because of many different factors. One facter is the cut of the stone, which is usually a Diamond. There are several different cuts, some more popular than others. Clarity is another factor, and you should either take your stone to a jewelry shop or pawn shop to get it looked at (also to make sure it isn't fake or damaged). The precious metals are more abundant, being measured in karats. Go to a jewelry store to learn more about karats, clarity, and cuts. Depending on all of these factors, pricing should be around $300.00-$1,000.00+.
Pawn Shops: There are 3 things you can do at a pawn shop; Buy, Sell, or Pawn. Buying and selling are self explanitory, but what is PAWNING? Pawning is giving our item (in this case, jewelry) to the shop owner. He or she will examine the item and give you a price. He will then loan you that money and then keep the item for the time being. Eventually you'll need to pay back the owner his money or, after a certain time period, the owner can and will keep and now OWN your item. Dispite that, going to a pawn shop is a great way to get your jewelry examined. You may even get a good deal to sell or pawn your item!
So follow these facts and you may get a good deal on some jewelry or you may find out that your significant other may have skimmped out on your gift. Either way, you are well on your way to selling some jewelry for extra cash...or change.
Great article, thanks! It's also good to check for karat stamps. 10k, 14k, 18k, etc they show the purity of the jewelry if it is gold. For example, 14k is a little over 58% pure gold and 18k is 75% pure gold. In the event you decide to sell, you may want to read up on some more consumer info and price charts at the Silver and Gold Exchange. They are at http://SilverAndGoldExchange.com
